ITG RFID ShortSort™
The ITG ShortSort™ is an RFID-enabled, small footprint, two-bin sorter for use with a standard book drop. When a patron drops items into the return, they are automatically checked in and RFID security is turned on in the same process.
The system is designed to:
- accept returned items
- identify the items in the ILS
- check items in
- reactivate item security
- separate items that cannot be reshelved:
- materials that are on reserve (automatically prints "holds" tickets)
- items that cannot be succesfully checked in (doesn't belong to the library, bad tag, missing tag, etc.)
- assign the other items to the "reshelve now" bin
- print patron receipts (optional)
The ShortSort has many advantages for patrons and staff. Patrons' items are immediately checked in as they enter the library. They no longer have to wait at checkout to be sure that previously borrowed items have been returned. Staff can immediately know when items on reserve have been returned. The sorter greatly reduces special handling of materials. Staff members only have to deal with exceptions.
Because the ITG ShortSort is designed to be mechanically simple and sound, with few moving parts and small enough to fit in even tight spaces, ITG is able to keep the cost of the system low enough for even very small libraries. And, even if you use another vendor's RFID system, you can still install a ShortSort in your library. If you thought your library couldn't afford an AMH (automated materials handling) system, you might be surprised to find out that you can.
